Our set up
Over the past 34 years I have been breeding with dwarf rabbits at our current location. It started in 1986 when I obtained a pair of dwarfs from my father and started breeding.
At that stage there was a huge club in the then Transvaal and my father had been breeding with all types of rabbits from when I was about 10 years old and I think that is why I got involved in breeding. Over the past 34 years there were some people breeding rabbits but there was only a club in Natal.
It was therefore difficult to interact with other interested breeders.
The ban on imports has not helped us at all as there was no new blood coming into the country. Up until 15 years ago I could exchange stock with my father but thereafter I have continued on my own and tried to keep the breed as pure as possible. Now with the GRBA we can share our experiences and anyone wishing to start has an excellent chance of learning all about rabbits and the do’s and don’ts.
Below is what my rabbitry looks like now after upgrades that I did and it has given me many years of joy and also sadness when thing don’t work the way the books say it should. There is space to house 46 dwarf rabbits comfortably.
